Bit more work required, it’s true - I need to add some more good soundbites from the same source, and maybe blend another tune in.

Actually, the drum fills at the end of each 4 bar segment were the trickiest bits. I quite like the way the final p-p-stutter trips into the extra drum roll.

It got released on CD last year, but on plastic it is ultra-rare. You can listen to a bit on Brute Force’s website - if you want to hear more I’m sure I can find an MP3 at a decent bitrate.

Update: I note that there is now a redaction plugin for Word. Used with Word’s export-to-PDF function, it may be an effective tool for redaction, though I haven’t seen any independent studies confirm that it doesn’t leave behind any detritus that might be of interest to a hacker. I’ll let you know if I find anything out.

Not a commentbut a qustion. I clearly remember seing ads for an apple group Mortimer. I am also quite sure that I have seen theirsingle on Apple records in the early seventees. Why is this Group and single never mentioned anywhere??

One of the great lost Apple records, I’m afraid. Mortimer are generally described as a “New York trio”, and are supposed to have recorded a version of The Beatles’ “Two Of Us”. (Richard DiLello refers to it in his book.) It was supposedly slated for release as Apple 16, i.e. in Sept/Oct of 1969, between “Hare Krishna” and “Golden Slumbers” - but it never happened. It’s possible the group or Apple may have had acetates of the recording made, but I’ve never seen one or heard of any up for sale: I imagine one would fetch a lot of money at auction. If anyone has a copy of the recording I’d love to hear it.

There’s a bit more on Mortimer here at Found Sound, reviewing their eponymously titled 1968 album on Philips:

New York’s Mortimer continually slips through the fingers of reissuers, but for not fault of the music. If anything, their lone self-titled album surpasses the vast majority of Nuggets tracks by bigger (and worse-named) bands.

Largely avoiding the bike bells, clown whistles, and tea kettles typical of so many post-Sgt. Pepper’s pop albums, Mortimer dates far better, as the band devoted themselves more to intricate, juicy honeycomb harmonies, hand percussion, and sun-drenched acoustic Balearic blues. “Mortimer’s Theme” drifts like an unreal Morricone romantic comedy score. “Singing to the Sunshine”’s vocal aloe oohs and ahhs over sun-poisoned banjo picking. Tolkien reigned big over the late-60s pop songbooks, but Mortimer even make possible fantasy disasters like “Where Dragons Guard the Doors” avoid sounding like an outdated trend. Somewhere between the pious mysticism of The Electric Prunes’ “Mass” and The Bee Gees’ early work…

In Holland there were two versions. The first one was a record with a modified label of an LP (which was a bit larger) and the second one with the right label. You can see it on www.schomakers.com
